You ask three agencies what digital marketing costs and get three answers: $800 a month, $3,500 a month, and “it depends.” None of them is lying. They are quoting for different things and not telling you which. This guide puts real New Zealand price ranges in one place, explains what sits inside each number, and gives you the questions that stop you paying for work you never see.
One caveat up front. Every figure below comes from published New Zealand agency price guides, not from a government survey, because nobody collects official data on this. Treat them as ranges for orientation, not quotes.

The first thing to understand: two bills, not one
For paid advertising, such as Google Ads, you pay twice. One bill is the ad spend, the money that goes to Google each time someone clicks. The other is the management fee, what you pay a person or agency to build the campaigns, watch them and improve them. A quote that only mentions one is only half the story.
Plan for both. One NZ guide recommends service businesses budget $900 to $1,500 a month in ad spend and describes a realistic all-in starting cost of around $1,400 to $3,000 a month once a management fee is added (the author’s estimate, published July 2026).
Also remember GST. Google states that all Google Ads sales in New Zealand are subject to 15% GST. If you are GST-registered you can normally claim it back, but it still lands on the invoice, so a “$1,000 budget” is really $1,150 leaving your account.
What agencies in New Zealand typically charge
Here is how three NZ agency price guides, all published in 2026, describe the market. They are agencies publishing their own view, so read them as a picture of the range rather than a rate card.
| Service | Typical monthly range (NZD) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads management (fee only) | $300 to $1,500 flat, or 10 to 20% of ad spend | Jelly Digital, Sept 2026 |
| Google Ads management (fee only) | $500 to $1,500 for a local service account | Horton Taylor, July 2026 |
| SEO retainer | $750 to $3,000 for meaningful small-business campaigns | Jelly Digital, Sept 2026 |
| SEO retainer | from about $499 + GST (local) up to $2,500+ (competitive national) | Grow My Business |
| Social media management | $500 to $2,000 | Jelly Digital, Sept 2026 |
| Full-service retainer | $3,000 to $10,000 | Nika Consulting, July 2026 |
The sources disagree at the edges, which is useful in itself. Where they overlap, the picture is consistent: a single channel such as ads or SEO is typically in the hundreds to low thousands per month, and a broad multi-channel service sits in the low thousands and up.

Why the same job gets such different quotes
Four things move the number more than anything else.
1. How competitive your market is
You pay per click on Google, and clicks cost more where more businesses want them. One NZ review of 698 keywords found costs from under $2 to $124.52 a click, and says local service clicks usually land between $3 and $20. A plumber and a law firm are not buying the same thing at the same price.
2. How much of the work is set up versus ongoing
Some agencies charge a one-off setup for building your account, landing pages and tracking. One SEO guide puts its setup at around $3,000 + GST before the monthly retainer starts. Others fold it into the monthly fee. Neither is wrong. Not knowing which one you are being quoted is.
3. What counts as “included”
Nika Consulting notes that quoted prices often exclude ad spend, landing page design, creative production and setup costs, which are frequently billed separately. A low headline fee with five extras is rarely the cheap option.
4. Whether anyone is actually doing the work
Jelly Digital’s blunt guidance: under $500 a month, be sceptical about how much real work is being done on your account. That is one agency’s rule of thumb, but it matches common sense. Real management takes hours.

What our own pricing looks like
You should be able to compare us against the ranges above, so here it is. For Google Ads, BeyondClix publishes its plans on our pricing plans page. As at the date of writing, setup and the monthly fee are the same figure on each plan: Starter is $500 setup and $500 a month for up to $1,500 of monthly ad spend, Established is $1,000 and $1,000 for up to $2,500 of spend, and Growth is $2,500 and $2,500 for spend up to $15,000. Ad spend is paid directly to the platform, so you see every dollar of it. Check the page for current terms, as plans can change. Pricing for our other services is quoted on request.
How to decide what you should spend
Start from the outcome, not the price list. Work backwards:
- What is one new customer worth to you? Include repeat business, not just the first sale.
- How many enquiries turn into customers? If one in four does, you need four enquiries per customer.
- What can you afford to pay per enquiry? That ceiling tells you whether a market where clicks cost $15 can work for you at all.
If the numbers do not add up on paper, no agency will make them add up in practice, and a good one will tell you so before you sign.

How long before it pays back
Paid ads can produce enquiries within weeks, though the first month is usually spent learning what works. SEO is slower and compounds over months rather than weeks. Be wary of anyone who promises a fixed result by a fixed date. You can see how each channel fits together on our services page.
Six questions to ask before you sign
- Is that fee for management only, or does it include ad spend, creative and setup?
- What is the minimum contract, and what does it cost to leave?
- Who owns the ad accounts and data if we part ways? (You should.)
- How will you show me which spend produced calls and enquiries, not just clicks?
- Who actually does the work, and how often will I hear from them?
- What would make you tell me to spend less?

Frequently asked questions
How much should a small NZ business spend on digital marketing?
There is no official figure. Published NZ agency guides put single-channel services such as ads management or SEO in the hundreds to low thousands per month, with ad spend on top. The better test is what a new customer is worth to you and what you can afford to pay to win one.
Is the ad spend included in the agency fee?
Usually not. Ad spend is paid to Google or another platform, and the management fee is paid to the agency. Ask for both figures in writing.
Does Google Ads charge GST in New Zealand?
Yes. Google states that all Google Ads sales in New Zealand are subject to 15% GST. GST-registered businesses can normally claim it back.
Why is SEO priced so differently between agencies?
Scope and competition. A local business in a quiet market needs less work than a national brand in a crowded one, and some quotes include setup, content and link building while others do not.
Is a cheap agency a red flag?
Not by itself, but very low fees leave little time for real work. One NZ agency advises being sceptical under $500 a month. Ask exactly what you get for the money.
