That single fact is why almost every business owner in Auckland has, at some point, paid someone to “do their socials” — and why so many of them cannot tell you what they got for it.

Social media marketing is one of the easiest services in the world to sell badly. The metrics are abundant, flattering, and mostly meaningless. The work is visible, so it feels like something is happening. And the gap between a feed that looks busy and a business that gets leads can run for a very long time before anyone calls it.

This is a plain guide to what social media marketing actually is, what the New Zealand numbers really say, and how to judge whether the service you are buying is any good.

Reach in New Zealand is not the constraint. Attention is.

The reach is real. The attention is not automatic.

Start with the size of the room. DataReportal’s Digital 2026: New Zealand report counts 4.24 million active social media user identities in October 2025 — 80.6% of the population — up 100 thousand (+2.4%) year on year. Internet penetration sits at 96.2%, and there are 6.22 million active cellular connections, equal to 118% of the population.

Platform by platform, the advertising reach reported in late 2025 breaks down like this:

YouTube — 4.24 million (80.6% of the population)

Facebook — 3.45 million (65.6%)

LinkedIn — 3.30 million members (62.7%)

Instagram — 2.65 million (50.4%)

TikTok — 2.04 million adults aged 18+ (49.6% of adults)

Now the caveat that almost never survives the journey into a pitch deck. DataReportal counts user identities, not people. One person with a personal Instagram, a business Instagram and a dormant Facebook account is three identities. Platform advertising reach is a number the platform itself reports about its own inventory, and it is not audited. Treat all of it as an indication of scale, not a census.

The honest summary: reach in New Zealand is genuinely enormous, and it is not the thing standing between you and results.

What “social media marketing” actually covers

The phrase hides at least four different jobs, and most disappointment comes from buying one while imagining another.

Organic content. Posting to your own audience. Cheap to start, slow to compound, and entirely dependent on an algorithm you do not control. It builds familiarity and credibility. It rarely builds a pipeline on its own.

Paid social. Buying distribution. This is where measurable acquisition lives, because you control targeting, budget and creative, and you can attribute the result. It is also where money disappears fastest when nobody is watching.

Creator and partnership content. Borrowing someone else’s audience and trust. Effective in the right categories, hard to scale, and easy to overpay for.

Community and service. Replying to comments, answering DMs, handling complaints in public. Unglamorous, almost never in the proposal, and frequently the highest-value part of the whole exercise — because it is the only one that touches people who are already close to buying.

Organic compounds slowly. Paid buys distribution now. They answer different questions.

A proposal that does not tell you which of these four you are buying, in what proportion, is not a strategy. It is a posting schedule.

Where New Zealand’s money actually goes

The IAB New Zealand Digital Advertising Revenue Report for Q4 and CY 2025 puts total digital ad revenue at $2.967 billion for the year, up 12%. Within that, search took $1.44 billion (+12%), video reached $653.8 million (+27%, now 22% of all digital spend), classifieds and directories $389.5 million (+7%), and connected devices $63.2 million (+20%).

Note what is missing: there is no single “social” line. Social spending is distributed across the display and video categories rather than broken out on its own. Anyone quoting you a precise “New Zealand social media ad spend” figure should be able to tell you exactly where it came from.

The trend that matters is video at +27% while display excluding video stayed flat. Attention has moved to short-form video, and the platforms have priced accordingly. If your social budget is still buying static images because that is what the agency has always made, you are paying current rates for declining formats.

The benchmark nobody puts in the pitch deck

Here is the number that reframes the whole conversation. In Rival IQ’s 2025 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report, the all-industry median engagement rate on Instagram is 0.36%. Brands in the top 25% reach 1.05%. The median brand posts a little over four times a week.

Read that again. A typical post reaches a typical brand’s followers and roughly three in a thousand do anything at all. That is not a failure of your content. That is the baseline everyone is operating against, including the accounts in the case studies you were shown.

Your audience, meeting your fourth post this week.

Two things follow. First, judge social content on whether it moves people toward a purchase, not on likes — because likes were always going to be scarce. Second, be sceptical of anyone promising engagement rates several multiples above the median without explaining precisely how. The usual mechanism is a giveaway, and giveaway engagement does not buy anything.

One more thing worth knowing, because it says something about how this industry handles data: at the time of writing there is no 2026 edition of that Rival IQ report. Several marketing sites nonetheless publish confident “2026 benchmarks” attributed to it. If a stat in a proposal cannot be traced to a named report you can open, it is decoration.

How to judge a social media marketing service

Six questions. Ask them before you sign, and the answers will separate the operators from the posters.

What is the business outcome, and how will we see it? Enquiries, bookings, quote requests, sales. If the answer is reach, impressions or follower growth, ask what those turn into.

Which of the four jobs are you doing? Organic, paid, creator, community — and what share of the retainer sits in each.

How is it tracked? There should be conversion tracking, UTM tags on every link, and a named place where you can see the numbers yourself without asking.

What happens to comments and DMs? Who answers, how fast, and does it happen at the weekend. This is where warm leads go cold.

What is the video plan? Given +27% growth in video spend, an all-static plan needs a defence.

What would make you tell me to stop? Anyone who has never recommended cutting a channel is selling activity, not advice.

A reporting view you can open yourself beats a monthly PDF every time.

Four red flags

Reporting that leads with reach. Reach is the easiest number to grow and the least connected to revenue. A report that opens with it is choosing what flatters over what informs.

Follower counts as a headline. Followers are a stock, not a flow. What matters is what happened this month.

Untraceable statistics. Covered above. Named source, opening URL, or it does not count.

No access. If the agency owns the ad account, the pixel or the page, you are renting your own audience. Ownership sits with the business, always. Assume you will change agency one day and set it up now so that day is uneventful.

Meanwhile: the audience that reach number promised you.

What good looks like for an Auckland business

For most small and mid-sized New Zealand businesses, the shape that works is unglamorous and consistent.

Pick two platforms, not five — the ones where your buyers actually are. For most B2C in Auckland that is Facebook and Instagram; for professional services, LinkedIn earns its place on 62.7% population reach. Post less often than the four-plus times a week the median brand manages, and make each one worth the slot. Put real budget behind the small number of posts that prove themselves organically, rather than spreading spend evenly across everything. Answer every comment and message the same working day. And measure the whole thing on enquiries, with tracking you can audit yourself.

None of this is exotic. It is just harder to sell than a content calendar, because it involves saying no to most of what could be posted.

Frequently asked questions

How many people in New Zealand actually use social media?

DataReportal’s Digital 2026: New Zealand report counts 4.24 million active social media user identities as of October 2025 — 80.6% of the population, up 2.4% year on year. These are identities rather than unique individuals, so treat the figure as a measure of scale rather than a headcount.

Which platform should a New Zealand business be on?

Whichever two your buyers use. By reported advertising reach in late 2025, YouTube leads at 4.24 million, then Facebook at 3.45 million, LinkedIn at 3.30 million, Instagram at 2.65 million and TikTok at 2.04 million adults. LinkedIn’s reach in New Zealand is unusually high, which makes it a serious option for professional services rather than an afterthought.

What is a good engagement rate?

Lower than most people expect. Rival IQ’s 2025 benchmark report puts the all-industry median on Instagram at 0.36%, with the top quartile at 1.05%. Anything promised well above that deserves a specific explanation of how it will be achieved.

Is organic social media still worth doing?

Yes, for credibility, familiarity and the community work that protects existing customers — but not as an acquisition channel on its own. If you need measurable enquiries this quarter, that is a paid social job.

How much should social media marketing cost?

It depends on how much of the four jobs you are buying and how much ad budget sits alongside the management fee. The question that matters more is what the fee is expected to return, and how you will see it. A provider who cannot answer that has not priced the work — they have priced the hours.

How long before it works?

Paid social gives you a readable signal within weeks, because you control the distribution. Organic compounds over quarters. Any promise of organic transformation inside a month is a promise about a giveaway.

Getting it right

Social media marketing works when it is treated as a distribution problem with a measurement plan attached, not as a publishing habit. The reach is there — 4.24 million identities and 96.2% internet penetration make that clear. What separates the businesses getting a return from the ones quietly renewing a retainer is whether anyone connected the posting to an outcome.

We run social media marketing the way we run everything else: tracked, reported in a place you can open yourself, and reviewed on enquiries rather than impressions. If you want a straight read on whether your current social spend is doing anything, we will look at it and tell you.

Sources

DataReportal — Digital 2026: New Zealand (social media user identities, internet and mobile penetration, platform advertising reach, October 2025 reference date)

IAB New Zealand — Q4, CY 2025 Digital Advertising Revenue Report (total digital ad revenue, format breakdown, year-on-year changes)

Rival IQ — 2025 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report and What is a Good Engagement Rate on Instagram? (median engagement rates, posting frequency)

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "BlogPosting",
"headline": "Social Media Marketing in New Zealand: What It Actually Buys You",
"description": "4.24 million New Zealanders are on social media.
