People click them. Your analytics shows a healthy number of visitors every month. Then the phone stays quiet and the enquiry inbox stays empty. It is one of the most frustrating spots a business owner can be in, because the money has clearly been spent and the traffic has clearly arrived. The visitors simply left without doing anything.

This is not bad luck, and it is rarely about the ads. Most visitors who leave an enquiry-based website do so for a short list of fixable reasons. This guide walks through them in plain language, shows what the research says, and gives you a way to find out which ones are costing your business, without needing any marketing background.

Most visitors leave without a word. The job is to understand why, and to keep the right ones.

First, the uncomfortable truth: most visitors were never going to enquire

Before fixing anything, set sensible expectations. A website that turns every visitor into an enquiry does not exist. Some people click by accident. Some are researching for later. Some are your competitors, suppliers or job seekers. Baymard Institute, which studies online shopping behaviour, makes the same point about stores: its research on abandoned carts excludes the large group of shoppers who were “just browsing”, which it puts at 42% of US online shoppers in the latest survey it links to.

So the goal is not to stop everyone leaving. The goal is to stop the right people leaving: the ones who came looking for exactly what you sell and could not quickly work out whether you were the answer.

Reason 1: they could not tell what you do within a few seconds

Visitors decide fast. The Nielsen Norman Group, a respected web usability research firm, summarised a large Microsoft Research study covering more than 2 billion visit durations across 205,873 pages. Its conclusion was that users often leave web pages within 10 to 20 seconds, and that pages which get past the first 10 seconds hold attention far better. Its advice is to communicate your value proposition within 10 seconds. (The article dates from 2011, so treat the exact timings as a guide, but the behaviour it describes is easy to see in any modern recording of real visits.)

In plain terms, someone arrives from a Google search for “commercial electrician Auckland” and needs to see, straight away, three things: that you do it, that you work in their area, and what to do next. Many sites open with a slogan, a stock photo and a paragraph about the company’s journey. The visitor never finds those three things and hits the back button.

The quick test: show your homepage to someone who has never heard of you for ten seconds, then take it away. Ask what you do, where, and what they would click. If they cannot answer, neither can your visitors.

A good first screen answers three questions: what you do, where, and what to do next.

Reason 2: the page was slow, especially on a phone

Nearly all of your customers are on a phone at some point. DataReportal’s Digital 2026: New Zealand report, published in November 2025, counted 5.06 million internet users (96.2% of the population) and 6.22 million cellular mobile connections, equal to 118% of the population. Your website is being judged on a phone screen, often on mobile data, usually while the person is doing something else.

Speed matters most for businesses that depend on enquiries. A 2020 study by Deloitte for Google, reported on Google’s web.dev site, tracked more than 30 million user sessions across 37 European and American brands over 30 days at the end of 2019. For lead generation sites, a small speed improvement was linked to a 21.6% increase in users reaching the form submission page. For retail sites, it was linked to an 8.4% increase in conversion rate. Note that this is Google reporting on research it commissioned, and it covers large brands rather than small New Zealand firms, so the exact percentages will not transfer to your site. The direction of the finding is the useful part: faster pages get more people to the finish line.

Google publishes the targets it uses for judging page experience, known as Core Web Vitals. According to Google’s documentation, a “good” score is:

Main content visible in 2.5 seconds or less (called Largest Contentful Paint).

Responds to a tap or click in 200 milliseconds or less (Interaction to Next Paint).

No jumping around while loading, a layout shift score of 0.1 or less (Cumulative Layout Shift).

Google assesses these at the 75th percentile of real visits, meaning three in four of your visitors should get that experience. You can check yours for free with Google’s PageSpeed Insights. If you see red or orange on mobile, you have found a leak. Ask whoever built your site for the fix and a timeframe. It is usually image sizes, bloated plugins or heavy tracking scripts, not a rebuild.

Every extra second of waiting gives a visitor a reason to try the next result.

Reason 3: the next step was hidden, vague or too much effort

This is the most common problem we see, and the cheapest to fix. The visitor liked what they saw but could not find the phone number, or the only option was a “Contact us” link that opened a page with a twelve-field form.

Baymard’s checkout research gives a useful measure of how much form effort costs. In its list of reasons shoppers abandon an order, 17% said the checkout was too long or complicated, and 18% said they had to create an account. Another 17% hit website errors or crashes. Those figures are from US online shoppers placing orders, not NZ enquiries, but the human behaviour is the same: every extra field and every needless step gives someone a reason to stop.

For an enquiry website, the fixes are simple:

Put the phone number at the top of every page and make it tap-to-call on mobile.

Keep the form short. Name, phone, email and a short message is enough for most service businesses. Everything else can be asked on the call.

Use a button that says what happens next, such as “Get my free quote”, rather than “Submit”.

Test the form yourself on a phone, every month. Forms break quietly, and a broken form looks exactly like a quiet month.

Fewer fields, a clear button and a visible phone number remove most of the friction.

Reason 4: nothing on the page made them trust you

A stranger deciding whether to hand over their name and number, or their money, is looking for signs that you are real and reliable. If your site has none, “I’ll think about it” becomes a polite way of leaving.

The signals that carry the most weight are the ones that are hardest to fake: real photos of your team and your work, customer reviews with names and dates, your actual address and phone number, and plain statements about how pricing works. Stock photos of smiling strangers do the opposite. People have seen them everywhere and tune them out.

One rule we hold ourselves to applies to you too: never invent proof. Made-up testimonials, inflated numbers and awards you did not win destroy trust quickly when a customer checks, and in New Zealand, misleading claims can also breach the Fair Trading Act.

Real photos, dated reviews and a visible address do more than any slogan.

Reason 5: the page did not match the ad

If your Google ad promises “Same-day plumbing repairs” and the page behind it opens with a general company introduction, the visitor feels a mismatch within seconds and leaves. The same happens when an ad for one service lands on a homepage that covers ten.

The fix is to send each ad to a page built for that one thing: the same words in the heading as in the ad, one clear offer, and a visible way to get in touch. This is often the quickest improvement available for a business paying for clicks, because it makes the ad spend work harder without increasing the budget.

How to find out which reason is costing you

You do not need a marketing degree, just three things done in this order:

Look at your own site on your phone. Open it on mobile data, not office wifi. Time how long it takes. Try to find the phone number. Fill in the form. Most owners have never done this properly.

Watch real visits. Free tools such as Microsoft Clarity record anonymised sessions so you can see where people hesitate or give up. Ten minutes watching recordings usually shows the problem faster than any report.

Check that your enquiries are being counted. Sometimes the website is working and the tracking is not, so the “quiet month” is really a measurement fault. Ask your agency to show you the calls and form submissions with the source of each, not just the clicks.

Fix one thing at a time and give it two to four weeks before judging. Changing everything at once leaves you unable to tell what worked.

What this costs and how long it takes

Many of these fixes are small jobs rather than projects: rewriting the top of the homepage, moving the phone number, shortening a form, compressing images, or pointing an ad at a better page. Done by a competent web developer or agency, they are typically days of work, not months. A full redesign is only warranted when the site is slow or confusing at its foundations, and then it should come with a clear explanation of why the existing site cannot be improved.

You should see the effect in your enquiry numbers within a month or so of a fix going live, provided you are measuring calls and form submissions. If an agency cannot show you what changed in enquiries after each improvement, ask why.

How BeyondClix helps

We build and fix websites for businesses that depend on enquiries, and we run the Google Ads and analytics and tracking that show whether they are working. We start by finding where your visitors are leaving, then fix the biggest leak first and report in calls and enquiries, not clicks.

If your traffic looks fine and your phone does not, talk to us. We will tell you plainly what we would change first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal conversion rate for a service business website?

There is no single reliable New Zealand benchmark, and published averages vary widely by industry and by how enquiries are counted. A more useful comparison is your own site month on month, once calls and form submissions are tracked properly.

Why do I get traffic but no enquiries?

Usually one of five things: the page does not say clearly what you do, it loads slowly on phones, the next step is hard to find or too long, visitors see nothing to trust, or the page does not match the ad that brought them. It can also be a tracking fault that hides enquiries you did receive.

How fast should my website load?

Google’s guidance for a “good” experience is for the main content to appear in 2.5 seconds or less, measured on real visits at the 75th percentile. You can test yours free with Google PageSpeed Insights.

How many fields should an enquiry form have?

As few as you can manage. For most service businesses, name, phone, email and a short message is enough. Research on online checkouts shows that complexity is a common reason people stop, so ask the rest on the phone.

Should I redesign my website if people are leaving?

Not necessarily. Most leaks come from fixable issues: unclear first screen, slow images, hidden phone number, long forms. Fix those first and only redesign if the foundations are the problem.

How long until I see more enquiries after changes?

Allow two to four weeks per change to judge it fairly, provided you are tracking calls and form submissions. Bigger changes to site structure can take longer.

Sources

DataReportal, Digital 2026: New Zealand (8 November 2025)

web.dev, Milliseconds make millions (Deloitte study for Google, 2020)

web.dev, Web Vitals

Nielsen Norman Group, How Long Do Users Stay on Web Pages? (11 September 2011)

Baymard Institute, Cart Abandonment Rate Statistics (updated 22 September 2025)

Figures checked against these sources on 21 October 2026.
